Where is Tibet?
With the average high altitude of four thousand meters, Tibet is located in the southwest of China. Surrounded by the grand Himalaya Mountains, Tibet stays close with Nepal, Bhutan, India, etc. Tibet is a part of China, and the whole name of it is the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) of China.
What kind of permits do you need when entering Tibet?
The first obligatory permit is Chinese Visa which is needed when you entering the border of China. You can apply for this permit in your own country by yourself. The second permit is Tibet Travel Permit which is issued by Tibet Tourism Bureau. Foreigners must hold this permit when entering the border of Tibet. An individual has no right to apply for this permit. You must resort to the right of a local Tibet tour company. The application of the Tibet Travel Permit is complex and time-consuming. A traveler must contact your travel agency in advance. So they have enough time to take the regular procedure. Normally, it takes twelve days to apply for the Tibet Travel Permit. And you should send your personal information such as the Chinese visa, passport, work, etc to your travel agency. After the issue of the Tibet Travel Permit, they will express it to your hotel. Then you can board the flight or train to Tibet with this permit. You are required to hold some extra permits such as Alien’s Travel Permit and Military Permit when visiting remote Tibet areas such as Mt Kailash, Mt Everest, etc.
How to get to Tibet?
At present, there are three ways for travelers to get to Tibet.
The first way is to get to Tibet by air. Flying to Tibet is the most convenient way for travelers to get to Tibet. At present, there are five airports in Tibet and serves numerous domestic and international flights. Travelers can take the direct flight from the mainlands of China and Nepal. The following cities serve flights to Tibet: Chongqing, Xi’an, Nanjing, Shangri-La, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Kunming, Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Kathmandu, etc.
The second way is to get to Tibet by train. Taking a train to Tibet is also the best way. Since the construction of Qinghai Tibet Railway in 2006, more and more travelers choose to get to Tibet by train. The scenery along the railway is stunning and attractive. You can enjoy the grand snow-mountains, tranquil lakes, majestic temples and monasteries, boundless grassland, etc. You can book the train ticket in some major Chinese cities such as Xi’an, Shanghai, Xining, Chengdu, Beijing, Lanzhou, Guangzhou, Chongqing, etc.
The third way is to get to Tibet by overland. According to strict Chinese law, foreigners can not enter Tibet by highways in China. While you can achieve your overland dream from Nepal. The Friendship highway has become the main way for foreigners to get to Tibet. However, if you take this way, you should apply for the China Group Visa in advance.
